Different Types of Omegas; 3, 6, and 9 Fatty Acids

Omega 3-6-9 fatty acids are composed of chains of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen atoms. The different between them lie in the molecular configuration, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. They are typically derived from fish and plant oils, and are relatively free from side effect. So, what exactly are omegas 3, 6 and 9? Why are they important?

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 is a type of polyunsaturated fat, consisting of alpha-linolenic acid, decosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid. They are essential because the body cannot manufacture these three acids. You must obtain them from food such as nut, fish and plant-based oils.

Health benefits of omega-3

Omega-3 corrects the imbalances in modern diets that can cause health problems. Eating food rich in omega-3 reduces the risk of chronic diseases like stroke, heart disease, cancer and lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This will enhance the elasticity of blood vessels, and eliminate the build-up of harmful fat deposits in the arteries.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Omega-6 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats, consisting of linoleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid. They are not manufactured in the body, and you must consume foods such as poultry, meat, eggs, nuts and plant-based oils.

Health benefits of omega-6

Omega-6 may helps protect against dementia and Alzheimer disease, and has a positive effect on gradual memory loss linked to aging. It reduces inflammation, heart disease, arthritis, asthma and depression. It can also be useful for health conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, allergies, hyperactivity disorder, high blood pressure and multiple sclerosis.

Omega-9 Fatty Acids

Omega-9 is a monounsaturated fat, primarily from oleic acid. Unlike omega-3 and omega-6, omega-9 can be produced in the body, but it is beneficial when obtained in food. It is mainly found in vegetable oils such as olive, canola and sunflower.

Health benefits of omega-9

Omega-9 fatty acids are protective against cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome risk factors. It also increases good cholesterol and reduces bad cholesterol to help eliminate buildup in the arteries, which can cause stroke or heart attack.
